Elodie Paillard is currently a Lecturer and Project Leader at the University of Basel and Honorary Associate in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney. Her research project on Greek theatre in Roman Italy is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
“I completed my PhD in Ancient Greek at the University of Geneva in 2013, with a thesis on the depiction of non-elite characters in Sophocles. It has now been published as a book entitled The Stage and the City. Non-elite Characters in the Tragedies of Sophocles (De Boccard, 2017). After this, I participated in several research projects devoted to the history of ancient Greek theatre, in France and Australia, before leading my own research project in Basel. Beside my interest in ancient Greek theatre, I have also worked on the development of Athenian democracy and its relationship with the place of non-elite citizens in society.”
“In the last few years, I have worked on Greek theatre in Roman Italy. Moving on from the Classical period, I discovered a new research interest in the interactions between Greek and Roman literatures and cultures. Within the RELICS research network, I am thus interested in better understanding how Latin literature became a truly cosmopolitan literature, crossing boundaries between places and times. At its very beginning, Latin literature also had to find its own identity and to define itself in contrast or in parallel to the already well-established Greek literature. This phenomenon and the reciprocal influences of Greek and Latin literatures on each other, two cosmopolitan literatures, are at the centre of my interests.”
